Message from the Director

October is sweater weather; the skies turn that rich blue and the leaves turn all the beautiful reds, oranges, and yellows to round out the visual feast. Significant turning points in the Revolutionary War occurred in October as well.

The Battles of Saratoga, October 7, 1777 that concluded with the capture of over 5,500 British troops, convinced the French to enter the war on the revolutionaries' side. The three-week Siege of Yorktown, which concluded on October 19, 1781, was the final major land engagement of the war. The British surrender at Yorktown led to the signing of the Treaty of Paris in 1783, recognizing American independence.
