AARP Taxes

The AARP, in co-operation with the Internal Revenue Service is providing free tax assistance especially to  low and middle class income residents, with special focus on senior citizens.
 
AARP Volunteers are trained in preparing 2019 federal and state income tax returns including any new changes. Returns will be e-filed at no cost to the taxpayer using IRS software. The AARP volunteers will prepare tax returns in the West Orange library on Wednesdays beginning at 10 a.m. Appointments will be on the hour from 10 a.m. thru 1 p.m. We will begin on February 12, 2020 and end on April 15, 2020. If you would like the AARP to prepare your taxes, you must make an appointment with Shawna Pressley at 973-736-0198 extension 215 or the Reference desk at 973-736-0196.
Before calling for an appointment, please ensure that you will have all the necessary documents for your appointment date. Documents you will need  include: 
 
  • taxpayer(s) picture ID,
  • social security cards for all taxpayer(s), children, and other dependents,
  • copies of your 2018 federal and state income tax returns,
  • all documents related to 2019 income(W-2’s,1099 etc.) and information regarding deductible expenses(medical costs, property taxes, mortgage interest, and charitable contributions etc.)
  • For those who may not be able to itemize this year based on the 2018 tax reform, your medical expenses may still be deductible on your state return. If you  purchased health insurance via the Affordable Care Act, bring Form 1095-A received from the marketplace and an exemption certificate, if applicable.
In addition,, if you bringing in a NJ Property Tax Reimbursement(PTR)/Senior Freeze Application form, usually sent to taxpayer in late February/early March to be filled out, please first stop by the West Orange Tax Office at Town Hall and have them fill out their portion of the form and have them give you a copy before coming to your appointment.
 
Please note that the AARP tax preparers are not able to prepare returns that include Uber and Lyft income, rental income on property, sale of business property, casualty and theft losses and some  other unusual items.  If you have any questions on whether we can handle some specific items, please contact Shawna at the library. AARP who will get back to you on whether AARP will be  able to prepare the return.
