AARP Taxes

AARP in co-operation with the Internal Revenue Service is providing free tax assistance to low and middle income residents with special focus on senior citizens.

AARP volunteers are trained and certified to prepare 2018 federal and state income tax returns. Returns will be electronically filed at no cost to the taxpayer using IRS software. The AARP volunteers will prepare tax returns at the West Orange library on Wednesdays with appointments on the hour from 10 a.m. thru 1 p.m. beginning on February 6, 2019 and ending on April 17, 2019. If you would like AARP to prepare your taxes, you must make an appointment in advance. To make an appointment call Shawna Pressley at 973-736-0198 extension 215 beginning on Monday, January 21st.

Documents you will need include:

  • taxpayer(s) picture ID,
  • social security cards for all taxpayer(s), including children and other dependents
  • copies of your 2017 federal and state income tax returns
  • all documents relating to 2018 income(W-2’s,1099’s etc)
  • information regarding deductible expenses (medical costs, property taxes, mortgage interest, charitable contributions, etc.)

For those who may not be able to itemize this year based on the 2018 tax reform, your medical expensies may still be deductible on your state return. If you purchased health insurance via the Affordable Care Act, bring form 1095-A received from the marketplace and an exemption certificate, if applicable. In addition, if you are bringing in a NJ Property Tax Reimbursement-PTR/(Senior Freeze) Application form to be prepared, please first stop at the West Orange tax office at Town Hall, have them fill out their portion of the form and have them give you a copy before coming to your appointment.

Please note that AARP tax preparers are not able to prepare returns that include such items as rental income on property owned, sale of business property, casualty and theft losses and some miscellaneous unusual items. If you have any questions on whether we can handle specific items, please advise the library. AARP will contact you regarding the return.
