AARP in co-operation with the Internal Revenue Service is providing free tax assistance to low and middle income residents with special focus on senior citizens.
AARP volunteers are trained and certified to prepare 2017 federal and state income tax returns. Returns will be electronically filed at no cost to the taxpayer using IRS software. The AARP volunteers will prepare tax returns at the West Orange library on Wednesdays with appointments on the hour from 10 a.m. thru 1 p.m. beginning on February 7,2018 and ending on April 11, 2018. If you would like AARP to prepare your taxes, you must make an appointment in advance. To make an appointment call the Reference Department at 973-736-0196 beginning on January 15th.
Documents you will need include a picture ID, social security cards for taxpayer(s), children and other dependents, copies of your 2016 federal and state returns, all documents relating to 2017 income(W-2’s,1099’s etc) and information regarding deductible expenses(medical costs, property taxes, mortgage interest, charitable contributions). If you purchased health insurance via the Affordable Care Act, bring form 1095-A received from the marketplace and an exemption certificate, if applicable. In addition, if you bringing in a NJ Property Tax Reimbursement-PTR(Senior Freeze) application form to be prepared, please first stop at the West Orange tax office and have them fill out their portion of the form and request a copy before coming to your appointment. Please note that AARP tax preparers are not able to prepare returns that include such items as rental income on property owned, sale of business property, casualty and theft losses.
