Lincoln’s Leadership: Inconsistency is the Hallmark of Greatness
Popular lecturer Dr. Bernard Ducoff presents a program in honor of the upcoming bicentennial of Abraham Lincoln’s birth. President Lincoln’s attitudes changed as he matured. His leadership style was influenced by the many challenges he faced during the Civil War. Learn about his inconsistencies and how they impacted his leadership style. Find out how Lincoln’s legacy continues to have an impact on us today. Dr. Ducoff discusses this fascinating topic on Wednesday, November 13 at 1:30 pm at the West Orange Public Library.
Dr. Ducoff served as Executive Director of the Jewish Education Association of MetroWest NJ and as the editor of the International Journal of Jewish Education. He holds an earned doctorate in Historical Studies from the Graduate Theological Union and the University of California at Berkeley. Dr. Ducoff is a frequent lecturer at the Library and in many Elderhostel programs. Call 973-736-0198 to reserve your seat for this free program.
Black History Month Program
The Library features Dr. Lawrence Hogan discussing the Black National News Service. Dr. Hogan presents “The Associated Negro Press: The Best Kept Secret of American Journalism History” on Thursday, February 19 at 7pm. Founded in 1919, the Associated Negro Press was one of the first ethnic news agencies to include national and international news coverage. Dr. Hogan discusses the history of the Press and the papers it served.
Lawrence Hogan, a senior professor of history at Union County College, has been published in the New York Times, the San Francisco Examiner and the World View. He also authored “A Black National News Service: The Associated Negro Press and Claude Barnett.”

Winter Wonderland Family Storytime
The Library kicks off the West Orange Township festivities on Saturday, December 6 at 11am . Before you take the kids to the afternoon activities around town, start your day at the Library. The “Reading in a Winter Wonderland” storytime features favorite snowy day tales and winter stories. Registration is not required for this free program! Storytime begins at 11am; the program lasts 45 minutes.
Wintertales
When you’ve had enough of the icy winter wind, warm up with Wintertales at the Library. Wintertales is a series of free storytelling events for the whole family.
Well-known storyteller Jonathan Kruk kicks off the series with “Faerie Tales from Around the World.” Jonathan brings classic fairy tales to life u sing varied voices, creative dramatics and audience participation. His performance concludes with a local legend. Described by the New York Times as an “intrepid storyteller,” Jonathan has appeared on PBS, the Travel Channel and the History Channel. Catch Jonathan’s performance on Monday, January 7 at 7pm.
The “Tall Storyteller” Kala Jojo visits the West Orange Public Library on Wednesday, February 4 at 7 pm. Kala Jojo tells traditional folktales embellished with a myriad of African rhythms—from drums and harp to kalimba and xylophone. His songs weave African heritage into stories of cultural diversity, healing, conflict resolution, and side-splitting humor. Kala has entertained audiences nation-wide.

Storytime Programs
Celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King’s Birthday at the Library. Drop-in for a storytime on Monday, January 19 at 3 pm. Join Miss Faith and Miss Lindsey for stories and songs that celebrate the values of peace & friendship.
Drop In Family Storytime - Bring the whole family to the Library and enjoy a half-hour storytime on Wednesdays. The storytimes take place on December 17, January 21, and February 18 at 7pm. Appropriate for all ages. Sign-ups are not required – just drop in!
The Library celebrates “Read Across America” with a storytime celebrating Dr. Seuss’s birthday! The beloved children’s author Dr. Seuss, who epitomized a love of learning, is the inspiration for this national celebration. Dr. Seuss’s use of rhyme makes his books an effective tool for teaching young children the basic skills they need to be successful. Monday March 2, 2009.
Children's Book Discussion Groups:
Kids love to read and kids love to talk. Second and third graders can do both at the Library’s Yakety-Yak book discussion group. Each month, the group discusses a different book and participates in activities related to the story. Does your 2nd or 3rd grader have a lot to say? Sign your child up! Pick up a copy of the book of the week in the Children’s Room. Yakety-Yak for grades 2 and 3 meets the third Tuesday of each month at 4:30. Click here to find out the books we'll be reading.
